I am drawn to the sounds a person makes when in the process of thinking what to say next. I refer to this phenomenon as “treading thoughts.” Though often overlooked, I believe the material surrounding the deliberate “content” acts as a lens by which we interpret that content.
As an artist, I explore this material, looking for ways to present a unique perspective on the pedestrian, while leaving enough space to allow the viewer a personal entry point into the work. As a designer, I employ a similar notion in order to interpret the given content in a more meaningful manner. This interpretation is the basis for a presentation that suites the intent and speaks at one or more levels to the audience.
Erik Austin Deerly is an interdisciplinary artist and designer. As a visual artist, he began his career working in the darkroom and prepress studio of a Chicago printing house, during the pre-digital age. Erik’s research and creative interests include the visual and audiovisual representation of data and information. His fondness for traditional ink, paper and typography is (still) evident in his book and poster art. He is Publishing Editor and Creative Director of Burning Word (burningword.com), a quarterly literary magazine. Erik serves as Assistant Professor of New Media Communication at Indiana University Kokomo.
