My abstract paintings capture the fluid, often chaotic, motion of life around me while including seemingly solid, typical elements of nature – like leaves – familiar to us all. Using professional quality watercolors in several forms, I further enhance the contrast between the flowing and staid components in my works.
Choosing from the vibrant colors provided by transparent French watercolors or the softer solid hues inherent in Chinese watercolors, I work to create interplay between the free form and the recognizable elements within each artwork. Accents and additional textures are layered-in throughout the process in the use of watercolor pencils, allowing their lines and scratches to blur and fade as they progress across the surface of the paper.
One hundred percent cotton rag paper is the most common ground for my art, as it is archival quality and won’t discolor over time. Since texture is an important element within my pieces, the surfaces of the papers selected vary from the smooth hot pressed papers to the textured surfaces afforded by cold pressed or hand-made papers.
