I love to create art. It shows who I am and what I feel. It's a whole world of thought, dreams, imagination, and color all on one simple canvas.
Alex Chereches was born on July 26, 1944, in the Village of Aruncuta in the county of Cluj, Transylvania in Romania. With a deep fascination towards art, at the age of five, he made his first drawing with pencil and paper. At the age of seven, he started coloring in his drawings. In 1960 he painted his first oil canvas.
In 1963 he began to restore old icons on glass. With a huge fascination towards this rare form of art, he then decided to learn the technique of “reverse painting on glass”. This is a very old tradition, especially in the domain of the Byzantine religious paintings.
Because of the communist régime in Romania was very oppressive, he asked political asylum in the U.S.A.
In 1985 Alex and his family immigrated to the U.S.A.
In 1988, he moved to New Jersey. After finally settling in New Jersey with his family, Alex felt that he couldn’t paint anymore. He completely turned his back to the world of painting on glass. He decided to focus on his job and family instead. He realized that Paintings on Glass as beautiful as they are, isn’t a favorite of the public.
In 1999, Alex rediscovered the work of European painters such as Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Joan Miro, Gino Severini, Wassily Kandinsky, Mandarin, Georges Braque, and the American abstract expressionists Jackson Pollock, Frank Stella, Arshile Gorki, and Willem De Koonig. He was very amazed by these talented artists. Alex states, “I never paid too much attention to modern art, but suddenly this fascination grew upon me and I wanted to explore the world of art to the extreme”. After doing some research on this strange and wondrous art, he decided to experiment. Alex states, “I love to create Art. It shows who I am, and what I feel. It’s a whole world of thoughts, dreams and imagination and color on one simple canvas. My dream is to open an exhibition and show the world what I can do.” Being a rare one of a kind painter, Alex Chereches is considered “a painter of international status”.
