Genre Bending
Is a photograph ever a painting? In the genre bending work of Brad Rickerby, one is often mistaken for the other. It is common to produce fine art photographs. Rickerby's work is something else entirely. His photographs push the line so far into the realm of art that they are frequently mistaken for paintings. Rickerby gleefully curves the line that seperates photography from painting, the real from the abstract. And he takes pride that his creations are all made in camera. No post production manipulations are done other than those that could be in a traditional darkroom; exposure, contrast and color.
Rickerby's actual paintings are an extension of the same visual aesthetic as his photographs. Both are explorations of harmony, chaos and abstraction, of light, movement and color.
Rickerby has been published in vitually every major publication in the world and his work used by a wide range of commercial, institutional and governmental entities.
International Photographer and Artist -- I think I was born with a camera in my hand. What I know, is that I was first published in LIFE Magazine when I was seven years old. Since then I have accumulated some twenty odd years in the image creation field. My work has appeared in virtually every major magazine in the world, including the covers of Time, Paris Match, and Hello. Other publication credits include People, Vogue, Playboy, USA Today, GQ, Fortune, Stern, Die Aktuel, The London Times and The Singapore Straight Times. MTV, Paramount Pictures, ABC, Saturday Night Live and most recently, Larry King Live have also used my images.
My images have also been used commercially and in advertising by entities as diverse as Microsoft, The People's Republic of China, The University of Michigan, The Bank of Boston, Hasbo and expedia.com, and on billboards in Brazil, Germany and Times Square, New York City.
Most of my work has been photographic. However, over the past several years I have turned creative vision to painting as well. Given my passion for the creation of great images, I have no doubt that my paintings will become as valuable and well known as my photographs. Being the first on your block to own a Rickerby vision could be the best investment you can make.
Until now, all of my images have been sold through agents to publications and companies.
