The original photograph shows a view of the altar area in a small one-room church near the village of Kato Arhanes, Crete. The villagers call the chapel "The Little Jewel" - perhaps, in part, because for at least two centuries the chapel has been a beacon of light shining in the darkness of whatever evil and misfortune may surround them - rays of light like those refracted by the facets of a precious stone or jewel.
