My plastic collages are composed from hand cut lighting filters called "theatrical gels". This process has develiped over 15years of experimentation, trial and error and general tinkering with emerging materials. The most obvious diversion from mainstream studio art is my use of theatrical lighting filters as a medium in my work. The filters are specially designed polyester films manufactured with a deep-dye manufacturing process designed to yeild incredible light fastness. The filter manufacture's process allows the films to retain their brilliance and color saturation under the intense heat and UV light of theatrical stage lamps. The spectrum of lightfast colors availed by the manufacture, coupled with the ease of fabrication, make theatrical gel a superb collage medium for adhesion to natural substrates, such as paper or canvas, or inorganic substrates, such as acrylic sheeting, metal or glass. Most collectors agree that the work is refreshingly unique whilst lending a nostalgic nod towards the mod-aesthetics of the 1960's psychedelic counter culture movement.
