I was inspired to paint this work while traveling in New Mexico. Yes it snows in New Mexico. This particular painting is a location in the Jemez Mountains along a long dirt road that passes over the mountains, well around it, through it, up and down, all around. Let me tell you the story. My wife and I were on vacation and were departing from North New Mexico where we spent some time in the historic Indian Country. It is a very nice place to visit and was like stepping back in time. Our destination when we departed there was Santa Fe, New Mexico. We looked at our map, which was pretty old and saw a route through the mountains that seemed to look like it would save us some time. I proceeded to follow my wife’s advice and began travel on this “short cut”. The road seemed ok, not too steep, a nice hardball road. Suddenly we came upon a sign that said beware, caution only proceed in 4 wheel drive during the winter months. Road is not improved or snow plowed in the winter. I mean, the ground was dry, the air was hot, it was spring, we would be ok. I kept going, being the man that I am and said, “I am not turning back, we are half way there!” We kept going and I had to maintain a certain speed in deep snow over mountains for the next 60 miles to keep from getting stuck. There were very beautiful spots along the way that I took photos of and this is one of them. When I got home I researched the route and found that the movie “Wild Hogs" the movie with John Travolta was filmed. I made this trip through the moutains in the winter and the locals thought I was loco for doing it.
