This humorous painting shows a bemused urban dweller who appears to be surprised by her amazing success with a house plant. Showing both eyes on the same side of the subject's profile was a stylistic characteristic of the New York School of graphic design, which flourished in the 1970's.

This monumental (72" x 42") representation of a New York City taxi combines the artist's vocation of cartoonist with his fascination with the possibilities of using metal from cans as an artistic medium. The body of the cab is largely assembled from pieces cut from Chock Full O'Nuts coffee cans, while the cabbie's mustache is made from the coffee bean images on those same cans.

Taxi

Fred Astaire and his faceless partner whirl in graceful circles, creating the shape of a giant orchid. The original of this piece of metal art measures 48" x 48" and was designed to hang "on point," to emphasize the poise, balance and motion of its subjects.

Flower Dance

This playful array of comic ideas, gags and jokes shows the kind of free association often found in random doodles, but is elevated to a higher level by the artist's cartooning skills and his dexterity with pen and ink.

Snippets

The great Willie Mays was the subject of the artist's first attempt to depict the human form with the metal medium. Pepsi and root beer cans were used for the bleachers and lemon/lime sodas for the infield grass. The slugger's skin tones come from cans of chocolate drink, cream soda and root beer.

Baseball Card

The impulse for this monumental (72" x 46") piece came from the artist's desire to reproduce the brilliant colors of a stained glass window using only aluminum soda cans. He found a photo of a Williamsburg street that included not only the stained glass pharmacy window (created here from 7-Up cans), but also the two hasidim preparing for a Jewish holiday. The scene in the kosher butcher's window is the artist's invention.

Williamsburg

This is the smallest (18"x14") and one of the last tin can metal on plywood pieces created by the artist. The sky comes from orange soda cans, the grass and leaves from lemon/lime. The tree trunk is a piece of a cookie can lid, and the flower centers come from coffee cans.
