Selling Your Art

Artist Rising Sales Channels

In your offline world you probably have an art studio (even if it’s just a corner of your garage).  There you can create and refine your art, prepare your marketing materials, communicate with your buyers, chat with other artists, and perhaps bring people over occasionally to make a purchase.  If you can, though, you are probably going to want to try to get your art into galleries and exhibitions, because those venues have the potential to gain you exposure to people who don’t already know your work.

We’ve replicated that approach in the online world.  Artist Rising is analogous to your studio, and you can use the Artist Rising tools to do everything you currently do in your studio (except actually creating the artwork!). You can invite people to your gallery and purchase your originals or prints. You can communicate with other artists through the forums and with buyers via your email marketing.  And, just like your real world studio set up, you’ll probably want to have your work exposed to more potential buyers by having it in a gallery, or in more than one gallery.  Artist Rising’s online Marketplace will serve that purpose initially, and you can look forward to other marketplace opportunities coming your way in the near future—all tied to your Artist Rising membership.  Stay tuned!

Print-on-Demand - How it works

As an Artist Rising member, you can offer your originals for sale as well as prints-on-demand.

Print-on-Demand is a process that enables you to make your original artwork available for printing and sale as fine-art reproductions and affordable wall posters, as they are ordered by a customer.  Nothing is printed until a customer places the order.  With our easy-to-use ordering process and state-of-the-art printing equipment, Print-on-Demand is an easy way for you to turn your original art into affordable prints, without an excessive and expensive investment in time, money or inventory.

Print-on-Demand is automatically set up after you have uploaded your images and added the pertinent details.

Artist Rising imposes no limitations on the sale by you of your prints, or the use of your images for any other purpose unrelated to Artist Rising or Art.com or the Art.com family of websites.   You continue to own the rights to your artwork.

See the chart below for a comparison with Fine Art Prints.  For further discussion of Poster Prints, see the Help topic Poster Prints.

  • Gicleee prints
We work with a reputable and experienced printing partner to create high-quality fine-art (“gicleé”) prints.  To create such high-resolution prints we need higher resolution digital images than used for photographic prints

To create a Fine Art Print:

    1. Place your order online through a dedicated section of the Your Gallery interface (under the “Set Up Prints” menu button)
    2. Complete instructions for submitting transparencies, negatives or digital TIFF files of your originals to the printing partner will be sent to you in a confirmation email with specific instructions.

For a comparison with Poster Prints, see the chart below. For further discussion of Fine Art Prints, see the Help topic Fine Art Prints.

Photographic prints

Our Photographic prints program is open to all members.

The process for setting up print on demand is straightforward.  After you've uploaded your images and completed the required information such as title, etc., print on demand is automatically on.  You can go into the“manage artwork” dashboard, however, and disable it at any time.

  • Go to the “Set Up Prints” menu button in the tray in the All My Artwork section of your gallery management area.
  • Drag the images you want to set up for prints into the tray and select “Setup Poster Prints” under the “Set Up Prints” tray menu.
  • The page that appears will start the process that will ask you for payment and tax information (so that we can send you your royalties), and making choices about sizes of the prints.
  • Check off the boxes that indicate the poster sizes you would like to make available for purchase as poster prints.
  • Make sure the year of publication is accurate (it will default to the current year if you don’t specify a year).  That year will be the year printed on the print as the copyright year, so it’s important that you provide accurate information.
  • Then, click the “Next” button.
  • Click the “Submit Order” button.

Here are answers to common questions about Photographic prints:

How much does it cost?
It is FREE.

What kind of image or file do I need?
You can use the same image files you used to build your online Gallery.  The higher resolution, the better the print quality will be.

What do I do if I don't have a digitized file of my image? Can't I just send you a slide or negative, or even my original?
No. Artist Rising cannot accept original artwork, slides or negatives. Contact a local photography or photo processing studio for assistance and recommendations.

What kinds of prints are available as Poster Prints?
You can produce affordable archival-quality prints in the following sizes and substrates:

  • Photographs & digital art: 8X10", 16X20" and 20X24" Standard Photo Prints on photo paper
  • All other artwork: 8X10", 16X20" and 20X24" Standard Giclee Print on matte watercolor paper

What is the royalty rate for the artist, and how is the artist paid?
Member artists earn royalties on the sale of every print sold. The retail price is the final cost paid by the customer, after valid promotional discounts have been applied. Royalties for prints are calculated according to a percentage of the post-discounted retail price of any print.

The royalty rate for prints is 30%.  All royalty payments are issued monthly as checks drawn on a U.S. bank, with a minimum payout of $50 (USD).

What is the typical retail price for a photographic print?
It ranges from $12.99 to $59.99 (USD), depending on the size.

Can I sign and number my prints?
NO, prints cannot be signed by the artist.  A credit line printed within the border of every image references the year in which the poster or photo was printed, and the artist’s name.

Can I see a proof of my image before it's made available for sale?
No. Proofing is not available.

Will I be notified if someone orders my print?
No, but Artist Rising offers its members a reports tool that enables you to track your print sales. You can access the Reports tool through the main toolbar after logging into your account.

Can I have my photographic prints reproduced on canvas?
Canvas is not yet an option.

How do I remove a photographic print?
There is no requirement that you keep a print on demand turned on.  If you want to completely remove an image from your gallery, you can simply delete the image from the “manage artwork” dashboard and it will no longer be available.  If you want to keep the image in your gallery but turn off print on demand, you can do so in the “manage artwork” dashboard any time.

Giclee

We work with a reputable and experienced printing partner to create these high-quality giclee prints and provide order confirmation and instructions for shipping artistic input (i.e., digital files, transparencies, or slides) directly to the printer as part of the one-time set-up process. Optional proofing packages are available for an additional cost. Email notification is provided to you during every phase of the set-up process, until your images are displayed on the Artist Rising website.

The print on demand for giclee is on automatically after you upload and complete all the required information.  You can turn it off any time, however, in the “manage artwork” section of the dashboard.

Here are answers to common questions about giclee:

How much does it cost?
It is FREE.

What kind of image or file do I need?
You can use the same image files you used to build your online gallery.  The higher the resolution, the better the print quality will be.

Can't I just send my original and have it photographed?
No. Our giclee printing partner cannot accept original artwork for photographing and giclee set-up.

WWhat kinds of prints are available as Fine Art Prints?
Free Membership and Premium Membership members can produce fine art prints, and giclée prints, in the following sizes and substrates:

  • Photographs: Fine art photo prints are produced on premium luster (semi-matte) photographic paper, rated by the Wilhelm Institute for a minimum 85 years color constancy, in two sizes - 16x20" and 20x25".
  • All other artwork: Giclée prints are produced on smooth Arches premium watercolor paper in three sizes - 16x20", 24x30" and 32x40".

We encourage you to make images available in multiple size and substrate combinations to suit every customer style, taste and budget.

What is the royalty rate for the artist, and how are the artists paid?
Members earn royalties on the sale of every print sold. The royalty rate is applied to the final retail price of the print, after valid promotional discounts have been applied.

The royalty rate for open edition fine art prints and giclées is 30%.  All royalty payments are issued monthly as checks drawn on a U.S. bank, with a minimum payout of $50 (USD).

What is the retail price for a giclee print, and who determines the price?
We set the prices for Fine Art Prints after extensively analyzing the market.  Giclées range from $18.99 to $139.99 (USD), depending on th size. We start with a formula that accounts for print-production costs, royalty payments and operations to establish a market-minimum price.

Can I see a proof of my image before it's made available for sale?
Yes. Single-proof packages are available for $50. Two-proof packages, of a single image on both substrates, are available for $75.

Who owns my image when I participate in the Print-on-Demand program?
You do. However, by participating in the Print-on-Demand program, you agree to provide Artist Rising with a worldwide license to display, publish, reproduce and sell reproductions of your image.

Can I sell my giclee prints on my own website, or on someone else's?
Yes. If you already have your own website, Artist Rising can help you showcase the availability of your work as Fine Art Prints and provide you with product links that direct your website visitors to ours to make the purchase.

Does Artist Rising support limited editions?
Currently, Artist Rising does not support limited editions.

Original Artwork

Artist Rising makes it easy for you to offer your original artworks for sale (in addition to prints if you choose to make your artwork available for sale as prints).

As part of the process for setting up your artwork in your gallery you are given the opportunity to indicate whether the original of each artwork is for sale.  Go to the “Manage Artwork” tab, drag an image into the tray, click on the Edit drop down menu and select “All information.”

This pulls up several tabs, one of which (“Originals”) is for making your choices about offering an original work for sale.  If you choose to offer an original for sale, you must designate the price, width and height.  You can also indicate the artwork’s weight.  You choose the price.

The sales of originals from your Artist Rising gallery are handled directly between you and your buyer.  If a buyer comes to your gallery and indicates an interest in purchasing the original of a particular work, we send you a message and you can then pursue this possible sale directly with that prospective buyer.

Sales and Traffic Reports

Use the Sales and Traffic Reports to track the sales of your prints and the traffic to your gallery and individual artworks.  By reviewing your sales and traffic data, you can better understand what kind of work is selling and what your visitors are most interested in seeing.  These results help you gauge public interest, and you can use this information to decide which images should be set up for print-on-demand, and which images should be listed for sale on the marketplace.

  • The Sales Report shows your sales, returns, and royalty paid on each sale.
  • The Traffic Report tells you how many unique visitors came to your gallery and how many total visits there were.  Keep in mind that some of your visitors may come back more than once, so the total visits will often be a higher number than the number of unique visitors.

To access these reports, log into your account and click the “Reports” tab.

Royalties

Member Artists earn royalties on the sale of every print sold. Royalties are derived from the final retail cost paid by the customer after valid promotional discounts have been applied. All members receive a 30% royalty on the sale of each print.

Royalties for all prints are calculated based on the final sale price of the prints, net of discounts, promotions, taxes, returns and shipping and handling. Royalty payments are issued monthly, with a minimum payout of $50 (USD).
